A Simple Opportunity to Give Back

I had just finished photographing a graduate when I noticed two women nearby taking graduation photos with an iPhone.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with using an iPhone to capture these moments. In fact, some of my favorite memories probably exist on a phone somewhere.

But as I watched, I also noticed something else: the daylight was disappearing quickly.

I had already finished my scheduled session, but I still had my professional camera and lighting equipment with me. I could see that these two women were trying to capture an important moment before the sun went down.

So I walked over and said something along the lines of:

“I can see you’re running out of daylight. I have my professional lighting system with me. If you’d like, I’d be happy to take some graduation photos for you—free of charge.”

Their response was simple:

“Really?”

I said, “Yes. Why not?”

And that’s exactly what we did.

Why I Chose to Do It

Yes, I run a photography business. My time, equipment, and experience are part of what I do professionally.

But I also believe that photography can be about more than running a business.

Sometimes you see an opportunity to help someone, and you simply take it.

This particular moment also reminded me of my own college graduation at the University of Kentucky.

When I graduated, my mom took my graduation photos with an iPhone. Those photos are still meaningful to me because they captured an important moment in my life.

But I’ve also looked back on that time and thought about how much I wish I had professional graduation portraits.

Not because an iPhone photo isn’t valuable—it absolutely is—but because graduation is something you only experience once. Years later, those photographs become more than just pictures. They become a reminder of where you were, what you accomplished, and the people who were there to celebrate with you.

That experience has stayed with me.

So when I saw these two graduates trying to capture their own moment before the sunlight disappeared, I thought about my own graduation.

I had the equipment.

I had the experience.

And I had an opportunity to help.

So why not?

Graduation Photography Should Be Accessible

One of the things I hear from people interested in professional photography is that they assume it is too expensive.

I understand that.

College is expensive. Graduation comes with plenty of expenses of its own. Caps, gowns, announcements, celebrations, travel, gifts, and everything else can add up quickly.

But I don’t want a graduate to look back years from now and think:

“I really wish I had gotten professional graduation photos.”

That’s especially true for students graduating from Kennesaw State University.

Kennesaw State has thousands of students working toward degrees and accomplishing something they have spent years working for. Whether you’re graduating with a bachelor’s degree, master’s degree, doctorate, or another credential, that accomplishment deserves to be documented.

I’m glad I walked over.

What started as a simple observation about the disappearing sunlight turned into an opportunity to give someone something they might not have otherwise had: professional photographs celebrating a major accomplishment.

And that’s something I don’t take for granted.

Photography has given me the opportunity to meet incredible people, tell stories, and document important moments. Sometimes those opportunities come from a scheduled session. Other times, they happen completely unexpectedly.

This was one of those moments.
